“Mr. Jonathan Bird qualified from University College London School of Medicine in 1997.  Joining the British Army whilst at medical school, he witnessed the highest standard of medical care afforded to our Armed Forces, as part of his training.  It was his experience in the army that first sparked his interest in orthopaedic surgery, particularly the treatment of knee injuries.  Service men and women are often required to perform physically demanding roles. It is crucial to manage their injuries with the best possible treatments, so that they can regain their fitness quickly, and resume their duties as soon as possible.

During his army career, Jonathan graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and rose to the rank of major. He served with the unit 33 Field Hospital, taking part in large training exercises in Cyprus, as well as a posting to Northern Ireland. A secondment to the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory in Porton Down provided him with academic and research experience in the field of blast injuries. He saw active service in Iraq in 2004, working with the surgical teams in Basra, treating the injuries of both army personnel and Iraqi civilians affected by the conflict.

Having left the army in 2004, Jonathan took up specialist orthopaedic training in and around North London, including St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. He completed a prestigious Knee Fellowship at Coventry University Hospital before taking up his current NHS Consultant post at University Hospital Lewisham.

Jonathan is the principle knee surgeon at Lewisham Hospital specialising in soft tissue injuries. He initiated the Acute Knee Service, so that knee injuries are rapidly identified and their treatment prioritised.

He enjoys teaching and is dedicated to providing excellent training and support to the next generation of doctors. He was appointed as the Undergraduate Lead for medical students from King’s College London, with regular teaching and examination duties. He is also involved in the training of orthopaedic registrars King’s and Guy’s and Hospitals.

Jonathan also recognises the importance of continuing his own education in the field of knee surgery. He keeps himself up-to-date by attending international conferences so that he can share expertise with the world’s leading knee surgeons. He applies all this to delivering the very latest therapies and techniques to his patients in London.

Whether he is treating an elite athlete wishing to return to competitive sport or someone suffering with the daily pain of arthritis, Jonathan is dedicated to providing the best standard of care to his patients; to alleviate their pain, improve their functioning and restore their quality of life.
